Drafting a brand new idea…
…which will kind of feel like being a penguin. 🐧
Kind of.
I had a very unexpected experience today. I had reached out to a colleague about some presentation work we did together recently and to make some plans for future engagements. We talked about how I wanted to engage in more presentation work but how I felt that it was difficult to break into this field as most conferences want someone who has written a book on education.
During the conversation, we ended up on a very different track.
“So, you’re a writer?” he asked.
I hadn’t actually said I was a writer. We were talking about how I spend my day off each week and when I said I exercised, rested and tried to write as much of my novel as I could, he said…
“So, you’re a writer?”
It is an interesting thought, isn’t it?
I guess a person who writes is a writer - just like this beaked, winged creature is a bird.
Penguins don’t fly. They sort of waddle about looking a bit unsteady. It took these three chaps a most ungainly move to get out of the water as we watched them: they sort of ‘bit’ the ground and heaved themselves up using their plump tummies.
The magic comes when they go underwater. They are incredible swimmers and they do in fact sort of ‘fly’ underwater.
I wonder if being able to say you’re a writer is about being able to give yourself the credit you deserve.
If penguins looked at the other birds who were flying around or perhaps had brightly coloured feathers, then perhaps they would feel pretty rotten.
If I compare myself to other people I might not realise my full potential.
Maybe I am a writer.
Maybe I will write this new book and find my own way to fly, even if it is underwater.

Such a brilliant analogy! And who doesn't love a cute penguin ;)
Very nice! especially that closing line - "find my own way to fly, even if it's underwater" love that :)
